I'm Carlos, that's Santiago. It happens all the time.
|Carlos, "Sweeping with the Enemy"|
Zoila mixes up waiters Carlos and Santiago. ("Sweeping with the Enemy")
Zoila is ambushed by her friend Frances into having a date with Adrian Powell, who she believes to be racist because, back when she was working as a maid, he never looked at her twice and, now that she's a socialite, he's acting as though he's never met her because apparently he never took any notice of "the help". Zoila's theory that her date is a racist is bolstered when he confuses the waiters Santiago and Carlos, both of whom are Latino. When she confronts him about it, he assures that the reason he got confused between them wasn't because they're both "brown", but because they're both waiters - he isn't racist like she thinks, but rather, classist. Zoila insists that that's just as bad though, later, she too confuses Carlos and Santiago, who assure her that it happens all the time. This forces her to reflect upon how much this new lifestyle is changing her. ("Sweeping with the Enemy")
