Frances is a supporting character on Devious Maids. As a woman of strong will, she powered through the many miscarriages her youth presented her with and adopted several children in the form of cult members, all worshiping her via the mysterious group known as "The Circle". Above them though, she had her "miracle baby" Kyle, whose relationship with Zoila she disapproves of because she believes her to be a discontent that draws her son away from his true calling: her. Eventually she skips town, taking Kyle and The Circle with her.
Frances finally gave birth to a baby boy named Kyle after a series of miscarriages that filled her with a terrible sense of loss and sadness. Him being born led to her dubbing him her "miracle baby", and the two of them developed and extremely close relationship over the years because of this. She is rarely ill, going forty years without a cold, and goes on to live in Beverly Hills with her son as her roommate in a house that needs fixing up, and the two of them are often doing things together such as travelling. Places they've been include Oahu and Manchu Picchu. ("Another One Wipes the Dust") While Frances' other children may not have survived, she did become the "mother" to several cult-members in a mysterious group she started known as The Circle. She was at the head of it, and had her "children" conduct interviews for new members, only scouting the rich and famous and having them spill all their secrets. One such video was of Peri Westmore confessing that she was raped by Hugh Metzger and that her son, Tucker, is in fact his. Frances used this to blackmail Hugh into funding The Circle, thus making Tucker Westmore the "key to everything" in regards to their monetary scheme. ("A Time to Spill", "The Maid Who Knew Too Much", "Grime and Punishment")
When Peri finds Hugh about to rape another girl, she threatens to expose him for what he is, only for Ben - one of Frances' "children" whom - to assure him that he's too important to The Circle and that they won't allow that to happen. Peri ends up dead at the hands of Hugh's daughter Gail Fleming, and Frances ensures that her husband Spence, whom The Circle has been drugging for months, is arrested for the crime and pliable enough to confess. Frances makes everyone around her believe that Spence is the real killer, including her real son and Peri's sister Shannon, a cult member. ("Another One Wipes the Dust", "I Saw the Shine", "Grime and Punishment")
Frances has other plans for her son that don't involve Zoila. ("Another One Wipes the Dust")
Kyle shows up at "Zoila's" house to ask her out on a date and she accepts. Zoila has lots of fun, but then they return to his place where she comes to discover that he lives with his mother, Frances. Despite this disturbing her somewhat, Zoila really likes Kyle and wants to give it a chance, and so she decides to proceed into a dinner with her new boyfriend and his mother. As the dinner progresses, things only get worse as she comes to realize just how close they are; they even travel together. They want to show her the photo album and her contrived attitude make Frances realize that she's weirded out by how close she and Kyle are. She confronts Zoila about this in private, eventually revealing that the reason she loves her son so much is because he was her miracle baby, having been born after a long series of miscarriages that left her with a looming sense of loss and depression. This obviously strikes a cord with Zoila, having recently lost her baby, and Frances senses that she needs a hug, and so she gives her one. She says that she's right next door if Zoila needs another, before joking that it's time to give Kyle his bath. At the end of the night, Zoila assures Kyle that she's okay with he and his mother being close, and the two of them share a kiss. When she's gone, Frances surmises that her son really likes this girl, and so does she - a lot, actually. But... she doesn't like her for Kyle. She has "other plans" for him. Kyle appears disappointed. ("Another One Wipes the Dust")
Zoila has to fire her "help", and Frances sympathizes. ("War and Grease")
Zoila shows up looking for Kyle only to learn from Frances that he's gone out of town on family business and won't be back for some time; instead, Frances takes Zoila out to lunch with her, and the latter starts to enjoy the perks of being within her new boyfriend's mother's inner-circle, with Frances still having no idea that Zoila is only pretending to be rich. Later, Frances tells Zoila that she's heard whispers from her friends about how Zoila's accepted multiple invitations to various social gatherings without extending any of her own. As such, Frances ran some damage control and told everyone that Zoila's hosting a cocktail party on Friday, to Zoila's horror. She doesn't think she has to resources to pull of hosting a party in two days' time, but Frances points out that her maid can simply do all the work, to Zoila's further horror. Zoila has her friend Carmen and her daughter Daniela work the party which Frances thinks is a huge hit, though things soon go downhill when Daniela spills all over Frances' very expensive silk blouse, leading Zoila to have to "fire" both her maids in front of everyone when they refuse to apologize. Frances expresses her sympathies for her new friend, saying that she understands how hard it is to find good help. ("War and Grease")
Frances is happy with how her plan is turning out. ("Sweeping with the Enemy")
After Kyle breaks up with Zoila, presumably at this behest of his mother, the latter takes Zoila out to lunch. She points out that there are plenty of other eligible fish in the sea, then trying to set Zoila up with the recently separated Adrian Powell. Fearing that Adrian may recognize her, Zoila tries getting away but just ends up causing a scene, and then, when Adrian helps her to her feet following her falling over, he doesn't recognize her anyway. Another dinner with Frances leads to an awkward date with Mr. Powell when Frances invites him to join them and then pretends to be sick so that she can leave. Zoila of course is unhappy to have to spend time with Adrian, believing him to be both racist and classist. Adrian proceeds to drive her home and walk her to her door, expressing an interest in seeing her again, but Zoila makes clear that the interest isn't mutual; however, he loves a challenge and plants a kiss on her anyway, to her shock. Frances watches from the window of her house and says how she knew those two would hit it off; Kyle watches too, seeming quite disheartened about the whole thing. ("Sweeping with the Enemy")
"Mother" kills her "son", Ben. ("The Maid Who Knew Too Much")
Instead of having Kyle supply Ben with drugs to use on Spence Westmore, she has him use a placebo since Spence's addiction is raising suspicion. According to Kyle, "mother" is very disappointed in Ben. ("A Time to Spill") Frances returns home early from her trip to discuss Ben with Kyle, meaning he is forced to hide Zoila from her to stop her from finding out that the two of them are seeing each other again. Zoila doesn't think that Frances would really mind and has Adrian call her up for lunch plans and then promptly cancel; Adrian agrees, while wondering who would ever be afraid of Frances, at the time time that Frances is berating Ben for disappointing her and threateningly tells him not to do so again, wanting Rosie stopped because she is going around asking questions about Peri's murder. Later, Adrian carries out the plan and cancels on Frances at the last minute, meaning she returns home to discover Zoila in bed with her son. Zoila is certain that Frances won't really care that she and Kyle are seeing one another again, but suddenly the old woman turns cold and makes clear that Zoila is no longer welcome in her house. Fabian, one of her "sons", scores Genevieve Delatour as a member of The Circle, and Frances is thrilled, though she is less thrilled when Kyle tells his mother to "go to hell" when she argues that Zoila is changing his personality and luring him away from her, and then he goes to live with Zoila. Meanwhile, Ben sends a message to Rosie by ramming his car into hers when Tucker Westmore is inside. Ben tells Frances that Rosie shouldn't be investigating any longer, but Frances remains disappointed in him for endangering Tucker, who she claims is the key to everything. As such, she slips him poison and watches as he dies in her church. ("The Maid Who Knew Too Much")
Shannon visits the base of The Circle. ("Blood, Sweat and Smears")
Shannon begins to grow worried because Ben isn't returning her calls, which Rosie finds strange. Jesse points out that, if she were to follow one of them, she could found out where it is that The Circle bases itself, and Rosie doesn't see this as a bad idea. As such, she decides to prey on Shannon, taking the Joynetics book that Genevieve got from Fabian and giving it to Shannon with a post-it note stuck onto the cover, which makes it look as though it's a gift from Ben. Haunted, somewhat, by this, Shannon proceeds to make her way over to Frances' house, and Rosie follows her in her car. She sees as Shannon knocks on the door and Frances answers it, inviting in one of her many "children". Rosie, knowing this house to be next door to where Zoila is currently living, knocks on her friend's door, only to be met by Kyle, who's been living there. She asks if he lives in the house next door but he explains that he merely used to, and that that house belongs to his mother. ("Blood, Sweat and Smears")
Frances requests that Kyle take care of Ben's body. ("I Saw the Shine")
Shannon bemoans Ben's disappearance, and hears from Frances that he relocated to Malaysia; she wonders how she's supposed to become a star with her manager gone, but Frances assures that The Circle still intends to make her just as famous as Peri, since they're so well-connected. Later, Zoila goes to see Frances and tells her she'd like to break up with Kyle, which Frances is enthusiastic about, but Kyle won't return to her unless she blesses his relationship with Zoila, for he is still mad about that. To create an excuse for Kyle to talk to his mother, Zoila instigates a "crisis" by setting the curtains ablaze with one of Frances' many candles; they make up a story for Kyle about how Zoila saved Frances' life, and Frances blesses the relationship, with Zoila suggesting that Kyle move back in with his mother so as to preserve the romance they've been lacking. All seems to be going according to plan, until the firefighter wants to take a look at the attic and Kyle and Frances act all shady about it, not allowing him to do so. Kyle later checks out the attic himself, then telling his mother that he doesn't wish to return to The Circle; however, he's already too far involved, and she needs him to dispose of Ben's corpse. ("I Saw the Shine")
Zoila is outed, and Frances decides to move far from her infiltration. ("Much Ado About Buffing")
To celebrate the fact that they're no longer fighting, Frances and Kyle go out to dinner together, during which time Zoila searches their attic for the videos the members of The Circle record prior to joining, so as to find evidence of who really killed Peri. However, all she finds is the empty spot where Ben's corpse used to be and the locked cabinet that she has no time to search because Kyle and Frances arrive home early. Before they enter the house, Frances asks if Zoila has broken up with Kyle yet, annoyed to learn that she hasn't, and is even more annoyed when she finds Zoila waiting inside in a maid's uniform, pretending to be partaking in some sort of sex game for Kyle as an explanation of her being there. She soon leaves, with Frances being very angry, and the old woman proceeds to visit Zoila at her house where she covers up her uniform with her employer's robe. Her employer is Fiona Gladhart, who has returned home and discovers Frances berating Zoila for not yet dumping Kyle and berates the maid for wearing her robe. She forces her to take it off, meaning Zoila has to expose her uniform, and Frances comes to realize that Zoila has been pulling the wool over her eyes for the entire time she's known her. She relays this to Kyle, informing him that Zoila isn't rich and doesn't own the house next door, though she later gets him to question his mother about the innocence of Spence Westmore. Frances maintains that Spence is guilty of murdering Peri and forces her son to choose her over Zoila, then saying that Zoila has infiltrated The Circle and that they must skip town before everything they've worked for is ruined. They proceed to pack up everything and leave in the middle of the night. ("Much Ado About Buffing")
- No official last name has been given to Kyle and Frances.
- Frances' relationship with her son has been described as "a little bit of homage to Laurence Harvey and Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate".
